BergNETWORKS.com and niekie.com double birthday: 2 years!

September 21st, 2009

So, it has been a long time since I’ve actually blogged about something. But of course, I couldn’t pass this up:

It has now been 2 years ago since niekie.com and BergNETWORKS.com were registered. As you all know, niekie.com is my personal website. BergNETWORKS.com is a service provider for mostly IRC and Jabber services (although there are a few other unadvertised services).

You’ll notice some small addition to the pictures on both websites. One has to celebrate a bit, no?

New host – Ignore the mess, please!

April 10th, 2009

So, I’ve switched to a new host. Please ignore the mess. Some old links on this weblog might not function at the moment. If you notice anything strange, please contact me (see the “Contact me”) link on the right side under “Pages”.

That’s all for now.

Ubuntu: No more Ctrl-Alt-Backspace?

January 18th, 2009

If you try out the latest Ubuntu Jaunty (which is not officially out yet, and I would not recommend for your main machine, where you do important stuff on… seriously, get Intrepid or Hardy if you want something stable), you might be surprised by the fact that you can’t bail out of X with Ctrl-Alt-Backspace anymore…

Apparently some people thought it was too easy to trigger by mistake, and now it’s disabled by default. That of course isn’t that bad.. but there’s no easy way to enable it again. No GUI tool, nothing. (there is a hard way if you want, though)

Now, granted, you can just switch to a tty, log in, and restart the X Server from there (well, if that still works… if the X Server is under much stress switching to a tty might not work as expected), but Ctrl-Alt-Backspace is much more convenient and will work in most cases, and might save you from a forced reboot if that works and switching to a tty does not. It has it’s uses, and is usually needed in an emergency if the X Server starts misbehaving.

So, here’s hoping that they implement a GUI tool so you can start using Ctrl-Alt-Backspace if you want again, without editing scary configuration files.

Introducing: labs.niekie.com!

January 17th, 2009

With the completion of JunkShell (the new directory listing method I’ve enabled on most public directories) I’m also glad to announce labs.niekie.com, a new repository for my experimental projects, and other goodies.

Basically, everything you’ll find there is experimental, whether alpha, beta, or whatever name you give it. You should not think anything there is in its final form. Some stuff might even only be a small part of a future project, or part of a toolkit. You’re free to try it all, but totally at your own risk, of course.

Please also pay attention to any files ending with README, and definitely do read through them before you go mess around with stuff.

Currently, you won’t find much there yet, but some more stuff should be available there soon.

Have fun ;-)
